Kanji Reading Practice #44 - Park Signs 階段注意

 Another sign that you may see an any type of park, or public, place in Japan.

The sign may not look exactly like this one, but I'm sure there are other signs out there that say the same thing. Sometimes it is difficult to go to public places in Japan if you have small toddlers, or if you are disabled. It seems that Japan is getting better at accommodating the disabled, but I think they have a long way to go.

先 (さき) - previous; past; former

階 (カイ) – floor; story; (1^st floor, 2^nd floor, etc.)

段 (ダン) – step; grade; stairs

車 (シャ) – car; vehicle

椅 (イ) – chair

子 (シ) – child

利 (リ) – profit; benefit; advantage

用 (ヨウ) – task; use; utilize

客 (キャク) – guest; visitor; customer

様 (さま) – formal name title; polite name ending

通 (とお) – pass through

抜 (ぬ) – extract; pull out

The Words:

この先 (このさき) – beyond this point; ahead

階段 (かいだん) – stairs

車椅子 (くるまいす) – wheelchair

ベビーカー (baby car) – baby stroller; buggy

ご利用 (ごりよう) – use; utilization; application

お客様 (おきゃくさま) – customer; guest; visitor

通り抜け (とおりぬけ) – pass through

できません – can’t do

The Meaning:

この先、階段です。

There are stairs ahead.

車椅子、ベビーカーをご利用のお客様、通り抜けできません。

Visitors that are using wheelchairs and baby strollers cannot pass through.
